Expansion of an existing stadium can be challenging, especially when the original stadium was built by another contractor. Fortunately, Shockey Precast has a history of successful expansion projects to its credit, and the company drew on this experience for the Liberty University Stadium Expansion project. An FOB project, Shockey Precast was contracted to manufacture and deliver approximately 200 pieces of precast, including 130 triple riser units, to the campus for erection that would occur during the school year. Speed-to-market played a significant role in the decision to go precast, as the university needed construction completed and the stadium open for its first game on September 1. Shockey Precast’s experience with stadium expansion projects played a significant role in the company’s ability to respond to the various challenges that arose throughout the project, including coordinating delivery and erection of the precast during the school year. Because construction took place while school was in session, the drop lot for delivery of the precast was located on the other side of campus from the stadium. From there, Shockey Precast drivers jockeyed the loads through a campus of several thousand students to the jobsite for erection by Commercial Steel Erectors, Inc. Delivery and erection of the precast began on February 19, 2018 and finished on April 3, 2018, and the project was completed in time for Liberty University’s first home game against the Old Dominion Monarchs.
